Overview of FieldLink Applications
Click to show/hide
FieldLink applications are customized single entry database systems that collect information from the field and allow for a suite of monitoring, evaluation, and reporting functions to be performed on collected data. FieldLink applications are currently used by 86 NGO partners in 39 countries in Africa and have user interfaces in English, French, and Portuguese. Real-time, multiple-user systems, they are also extensively used by the prime contractors and the funders to help partners build capacity, analyze program outcomes, engage in advocacy, and make programmatic decisions.
We are dedicated to ensuring that all users participate in shaping the usability of their FieldLink system. Each database application is designed so that it is easy to modify and new rollouts can be done immediately. As they use state-of-the-art rapid application development software, revisions to the code can be accomplished with a short turnaround time. FieldLink database applications are highly scalable tools in terms of the scope of the application, the volume of data, and the number of concurrent users.
FieldLink data entry windows accept a high level of detail, which in turn allows for a powerful and flexible reporting environment. With real time data reporting, FieldLink queries and reports reflect accurate up-to-the-minute values.
One of the key features of FieldLink's unique structure is its low-bandwidth capability which allows for efficient access from the field, even with low bandwidth dial-up connections and outdated computers.
Users at all levels, in Africa, Nepal and in the United States have appreciated the adaptability and functionality of this dynamic information repository. NGOs in Africa have cited the importance of FieldLink in decision-making, program management and involving stakeholders at local, regional, national, and international levels.
Database applications are only effective in so far as the information contained within is accurate and reliable. One essential aspect of the success of FieldLink as an MER tool has been to include an intricately related human component: a close web of interpersonal relations between SageFox and users, and a program of field-based face-to-face visits with partners to conduct field-based verification, training, and capacity building. This has, among other outcomes, ensured that a culture of data has emerged alongside the technical and factual aspects of data collection and entry.

FieldLink is a single entry system that collects information from the field and allows for a suite of MER functions to be performed on the collected data.
Ease of modification
FieldLink is programmed using state-of-the-art rapid application development software. Revisions to the code can be accomplished with a short turnaround time.
Evolution of product
FieldLink is highly scalable in terms of the scope of the application, the volume of data, and the number of concurrent users.
Incremental Rollouts
FieldLink submodules can be deployed when they become available. Additions to the code can be deployed immediately, without waiting for a major version release.
Granular data entry
FieldLink data entry windows accept a high level of detail, which in turn allows for a powerful and flexible reporting environment.
Real-time data reporting
FieldLink queries and reports reflect accurate up-to-the-minute values. Summary information reflects current values in the database.
Multiple user-level access
Access to different functions within the application are controlled by username and password. The same system is used by data entry clerks and high level government officials.
Low bandwidth
FieldLink's unique structure allows for efficient access from the field, even with low bandwidth dial-up connections and ancient computers.
Platform independent
FieldLink uses a browser-based interface that functions consistently regardless of operating system.
High performance
FieldLink runs 24/7 on a high-speed server with a permanent internet connection. Database and system backups are accomplished without any down time.
Multiple languages
FieldLink is currently available in English, French, and Portuguese and can be easily expanded to other languages upon request.
FieldLink Architecture
Click to show/hide
FieldLink utilizes an ultra-thin html interface. This consists of a series of html forms which each send their results to an Omnis remote task. The remote task accepts the form parameters, performs whatever database interactions are required by the application, and then formulates html to send back to the user. The html is entirely generated dynamically by FieldLink as a text string.
Software Components
FieldLink consists of a number of interacting software components:
Apache Web Server
The Apache Web Server receives http requests from the internet and passes the requests on to the Omnis Studio Library.
Omnis Studio
The Omnis Studio Library receives requests from the Apache Web Server and determines what action to take based on parameters passed in the request. When processing of a request is complete, the Omnis Studio Library formats a string of text and passes it back to the Apache Web Server as an HTML document.
OpenBase Database Server
The OpenBase Database Server holds and manages all data. Based on the type of request, the Omnis Studio Library may call OpenBase with select, update, insert, or delete requests.
